Response to Intervention (RTI) initiatives have rapidly gained ground across the US as education continues to change rapidly in this arena. We’ll look at RTI initiatives’ current state in America with specific regard to findings from preschool and K-12 RTI surveys in this blog post.

Let’s first discuss the Preschool RTI Survey. This research sought to assess implementation and effectiveness of RTI across preschool settings across America through an in-person and telephone survey administered to early childhood educators, administrators, and policymakers from every state and the District of Columbia.

State by State Findings sections of the survey revealed RTI was being implemented differently across states, with some emphasizing early identification and intervention for at-risk children while others applied it as tiered instruction models to support all preschoolers. National Findings highlighted collaboration and professional development as critical aspects for effective RTI implementation initiatives with nearly 90% of respondents citing them as essential to its success.

The K-12 RTI Survey sought to understand the implementation and effectiveness of RTI programs at elementary, middle and secondary schools across America. Similar to its preschool counterpart, it revealed that collaboration and professional development are integral parts of successful RTI implementation in elementary, middle and secondary school settings; furthermore technology had become more pervasive within K-12 RTI; progress monitoring tools were particularly popular as were online instructional resources for instruction and remediation purposes.

The Findings section of the K-12 RTI Survey provided useful insight into both challenges and successes associated with RTI implementation in schools. One significant challenge identified by respondents was an inadequate allocation of resources – time, money and personnel to fully support RTI initiatives. Conversely, respondents also reported improved academic performance as well as reduced disciplinary incidents after RTI implementation in their schools.

Preschool and K-12 RTI Surveys offer valuable insights into the current state of RTI initiatives in the United States, with their findings showing collaboration, professional development, technology use, and limited resources proving essential components to successful RTI implementation. However, challenges persist such as resource scarcity; thus emphasizing the necessity of continuing support and investment into these initiatives to ensure their effectiveness across the board for students.
