Example Tier 3 Instructional Sequence


Lesson 25 - Isolating the first syllable in 2- and 3-syllable words

Materials: Pictures (specified multisyllabic words selected from Biemiller root words)
Introduce the activity: Place pictures in a pile in the middle of the table, face down.

Today we are going to clap and say the first part of some words. : First,
let’s say the names of all of these pictures.
Show each picture and have the
children say the name with you. If children do not know the name of a picture say,
This is ______. What is this? Put the picture back in the deck and review it
until children are familiar with all of the pictures.

Review: Pick the top picture from the pile. The first word is xx. Everybody say the
word. Xx. Listen, while I clap and say xx. x
(clap) x (clap). Everyone clap and say
xx with me. X
(clap) x (clap). (Give individual turns; repeat with 1-2 additional pictures
if children need more review).

Model it: Now, listen while I clap and say the first part (emphasize) of xx.
X(clap).

Do it Together: Everyone clap and say the first part of xx with me. Ready?
X (clap). Let’s do it again, just the first part.

X (clap) You Do it: Give individual turns

Repeat steps 3-5 with 1-2 more words.

  • You Do it: Now, I am going to pick a picture and say the word and I want you to clap just the
    first part of the word. Ready?
  • Pick the top picture and say the word. Have children respond as a group on cue. Give individual turns.
  • Practice: Repeat step 7 with 2-4 more words as time allows.

* If children make an error, immediately model the correct response and have children repeat it.
